Air Travel Protocols By Risk Category

Protocols change frequently and this page may not have the latest data at any time. Please click the orange box above for the latest updates.

The summary below is much the same as the revised form. A major difference is the treatment of categories for high risk, medium risk and low risk travellers.

High Risk: Includes USA, Brazil, India, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, South Africa, Indonesia, Philippines and Russia.

Moderate Risk: Includes Canada, UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Portugal, Sweden, Australia, Egypt, Ghana, China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

Low Risk: Includes Uruguay, Cuba, New Zealand, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Guyana and CARICOM States. (BGIS)

Air Travel Flights Protocols Revised July 16th – What’s New

High-Risk Travellers (from High Risk countries) who do not have a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours prior to arrival in Barbados will be tested at the airport and will stay there until the results are available. High risk passenders are required to self-quarantine for 7 days while they are monitored and tested.

Medium-Risk Travellers who do not have a negative PCR test result will be required to have a COVID-19 PCR test. They are not required to wait for their results at the airport and can proceed to their intended addresses. They should remain in quarantine until the test results are known (usually 24 hours).

Low-Risk Travellers who have not visited a high risk country within 21 days prior to arrival should present valid results of a test done within one week prior to travel to Barbados.

Medium or Low Risk Travellers without a valid test can be tested at the airport free of charge or at approved satellite sites for a fee of USD $150.

The intention of the protocols is to reduce risk and look after visitors and locals as the island lets in measured numbers of visitors from select destinations.

We are living with COVID-19 and expect there will be some new cases. Barbados has demonstrated that it can cope with outbreaks and has been acclaimed as one of the top countries in managing the pandemic.

Barbados opens up its world-class tourism destination. Air traffic resumed at the Grantley Adams International Airport on July 12.

Air Canada Flights Start July 12

Air Canada arriving on Thursdays and Sundays from July 12th.

British Airways resuming from Gatwick on July 18 with one flight per week but more will be added based on demand.

JetBlue is expected to arrive four times per week from JFK, starting on July 25. This is very tentative!

Virgin Atlantic may start with one fight a week on August 1. They will ramp back up to full schedule for the winter in October.

American Airlines is expected to start August 5, out of Miami.

Barbados Air Travel Protocols for your journey - from pre-flight to your vacation accommodation

Below are the Government protocols. You may download full details as of July 16, 2020. All are subject to change depending on how things unfold. Here is our brief summary.

A. Entry Requirements – Flights Protocols – Revised/Updated

  1. All travellers must complete an Embark/Disembark form which may be obtained at www.travelform.gov.bb. This should be done at least 24 hours before arrival.
  2. All visitors are strongly encouraged to take a COVID-19 PCR Test from an accredited or certified facility/laboratory. Test results should be submitted electronically and travellers should also bring a copy of test results with them. Children under five years old may be exempt from taking a test unless they are symptomatic or their guardian has a positive test. Unaccompanied minors will be required to have a negative COIVID-19 test to enter Barbados.
  3. Travellers without a negative test certificate will be required to take the test in Barbados.
  4. High-risk travellers without a negative test certificate taken within 72 hours prior to arrival in Barbados will be tested at the airport and will have to wait for the results. They will be quarantined for 7 days with close monitor and testing.
  5. Medium or low risk travellers without a valid test can be tested at the airport free of charge or at approved satellite sites for a fee of USD $150. They are not required to wait for their results at the airport. They must self-quarantine until the test results are known (usually 24 hours).
  6. Low-Risk travellers who have not visited a high risk country within 21 days prior to arrival, should present valid results of a test done within one week prior to travel to Barbados.

what you need to know when you land at Barbados aipoort
  1. Masks must be worn while at the airport in Barbados.
  2. Arriving passengers will be screened for temperature and may have a brief health assessment interview.
  3. All incoming travellers who have a negative test certificate will present the results for review by the Ministry of Health and Wellness in Barbados. This test must have been conducted within the period specified. Results of tests conducted outside of the time specified shall not be accepted. Any person who fails to satisfy the above requirements must be tested in Barbados on arrival.
  4. A visitor who does not present a valid negative test result and who declines testing on arrival, will be denied entry into Barbados.
  5. Citizens, permanent residents and people with permanent status who do not present a valid negative test result and who decline testing on arrival will be quarantined in a Government facility.
  6. High risk travellers will be required to have a negative COVID-19 PCR test and will be quarantined at an approved facility.
  7. Medium or low risk travellers with negative test results may proceed to Immigration and Customs and may leave the airport.
  8. Medium and low risk travellers who are tested at the airport may await the test results in a designated hotel at their own expense. They must remain in that accommodation until they receive their results. (usually within 24 hours).

C. Passengers In-transit Via Barbados – Revised/Updated

  1. Masks must be worn by all in-transit passengers while at the airport in Barbados.
  2. All in-transit passengers must have a health assessment which may include an interview by Port Health personnel and a temperature check.
  3. In-transit passengers must have a valid negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival. Passengers without evidence of a valid negative test may be denied entry.

The Government of Barbados reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone who does not have a valid test.

D. Stay in Barbados Protocols – Revised/Updated

  1. Visitors must abide by all public health and social measures including physical distancing, hygiene practices, wearing of face masks and all other relevant measures.
  2. All passengers must report any symptoms to public health officials or relevant hotel/accommodation management.
  3. High risk travellers will be quarantined and monitored daily for the onset of symptoms and will have a second test in seven days.
  4. Moderate risk travellers will be monitored for seven days.
  5. Any person may be requested to undergo an additional test if circumstances require it.
  6. Any person who tests positive will be isolated and treated in alternative accommodations until they have two consecutive negative tests.
  7. Any person who has been in close contact with a positive case will be quarantined at facilities approved by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
