After Hurricane Beryl passed south of the island, Barbados is well underway with clean up work particularly on the south coast which saw remarkable storm surges.

The island was spared a direct from the category 4 hurricane, which passed 80 miles (130 km) south of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 kmh).

However sustained storm force winds (and higher gusts) did batter Barbados from early on Monday morning causing significant swells along the south and west coasts.

The hurricane’s swirling winds caused storm surges resulting in significant flooding, beach erosion, and damage to beachfront businesses. The impact was particularly strong in the Hastings and Oistins areas on the south coast, and Speightstown and Six Men’s areas on the north-west coast.

There was also significant damage at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex, where at least 20 fishing boats were seriously damaged or destroyed as massive waves made it over the breakwaters and battered the vessels which has sought safe harbour at the usually well-protected complex.

By early afternoon, government teams and private business owners were assessing the damage and clean up crews began clearing debris, with Barbadians rolling up their sleeves to get things back in shape.

Downed trees and telephone poles could be seen around the island, however power was restored for most customers within a few hours.
