Open House: Bellevue Plantation

The Open House programme is presented by the Barbados National Trust.

This week's Open House is Bellevue Plantation.

In 1635, when the plantation was established, it would have had a beautiful view (Bellevue) down to Bridgetown and out to sea. It still does, but the slope is now a manicured lawn, enhancing the stately feeling. The design of the original house reflected the architectural characteristics of the age, to which tropical features were added to create the Caribbean Georgian style. The house was probably built between 1735 and 1750, and since that time has been owned by Barbadian Dowdings, Connells and Collymores, before passing into the expatriate hands of Dr. Arno Trieloff. It is now owned by English developers, who have made further changes.

Large, airy and graceful, the house has been restored and renovated with great sensitivity to its classic design.  Inside, antiques mingle easily with contemporary furnishings, and sporty details add pleasant surprises. Mosaics, converted outbuildings, sugar-era relics, horses, and vast gardens complete the ambience.

In addition to the Lively Lecture by Sir Henry Fraser at 3 pm and the garden party atmosphere, this occasion also features an Exhibition Polo Match at 4 pm on the property’s new polo field.

The grounds will be alive with vendors of select fine craft, art, condiments, books, and locally-made refreshments including fresh juices.

A portion of these sales, and all of the admission fee, support the Trust’s heritage preservation work.
