Nidhe Israel Museum (Jewish Museum)
The Nidhe Israel Museum is located next to the synagogue in the capital city of Bridgetown.
The museum traces Jewish history in Barbados dating back to the arrival of the earliest Jews in 1628 and highlights their contribution to Barbadian society.
Exhibits at the Nidhe Israel Museum include a timeline of Jewish settlement in Barbados, artifacts and interactive displays. As you explore the museum you'll learn how Barbados was a refuge for Jews fleeing persecution, their important role in the Barbados sugar industry, and the challenges they faced on the island.
The museum building itself is quite magnificent having been originally constructed around 1700.
The museum overlooks the burial grounds and across to the still actively used synagogue.
Located in the grounds is a full immersion Mikvah, which dates back to the 17th century and is the only known one in existence in the americas.
The museum is open 9am - 4pm, Monday - Friday with an admission fee.
The Nidhe Israel Museum is located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Historic Bridgetown and Its Garrison and is also a part of the Synagogue Historic District which you can explore at synagoguehistoricdistrict.com.
