We then explored the first site, the capital city of Bridgetown.<\/p>\n<p>The second site nominated is the <strong>Garrison Historic Area<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90\" class=\"size-full wp-image-90\" title=\"Clock tower at the main guard\" src=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/main-guard.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"267\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-90\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clock tower at the main guard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Barbados Garrison was established in\u00a01780 and was the largest in the British colonies. Their role included defending the island from invasions by other European powers and quelling of slave rebellions.<\/p>\n<p>The contribution of the Garrison to the architectural heritage of this area on the south-west coast of Barbados is immense.<\/p>\n<p>Historic buildings in the area include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>St. Ann\u2019s Fort &#8211; now home to the Barbados Defence Force<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0Main Guard &#8211; boasting a unique\u00a0George III Coat of Arms<\/li>\n<li>the Barbados Museum and Historical Society &#8211; originally the Military Prison<\/li>\n<li>George Washington House &#8211; where the American president stayed in\u00a01751<\/li>\n<li>Pavilion Court &#8211; served as the Garrison Hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_96\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"size-full wp-image-96\" title=\"Part of the impressive cannon collection!\" src=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cannon.jpg\" alt=\"Part of the impressive cannon collection!\" width=\"250\" height=\"228\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Part of the impressive cannon collection!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also found in the Garrison Historic Area is the world&#8217;s largest collection of <a title=\"Barbados cannon collection\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barbados.org\/garison.htm?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=link&amp;utm_campaign=Post\">17th century English cannon<\/a> and the <strong>Garrison Savannah<\/strong>. The Savannah is home to the\u00a0Barbados Turf Club and comes alive with horse racing on Saturdays throughout the racing seasons.
