Barbados’ capital city Bridgetown <\/strong>and the nearby historic Garrison <\/strong>have gained approval to the prestigious\u00a0World Heritage List!<\/p>\n

In approving the nomination the World Heritage Committee stated that the area was\u00a0an outstanding example of British colonial architecture.<\/p>\n

Bridgetown<\/a> <\/strong>was established in 1628 and quickly\u00a0became the hub of commercial activity in the island.\u00a0Bridgetown is home to many historic buildings and monuments including the 3rd oldest parliament in the Western Hemisphere, a statue of Lord Horatio Nelson that predates that in Trafalgar Square and a monument to fallen soldiers.<\/p>\n

The Barbados Garrison<\/a> <\/strong>was established in\u00a01780 and was the largest in the British colonies. The\u00a0Garrison Historic Area <\/strong>includes many historic buildings \u00a0and is home to \u00a0the world\u2019s largest collection of\u00a017th century English cannon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A statement from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said of the area: “With its serpentine urban layout, the property testifies to a different approach to colonial town planning compared to the Spanish and Dutch colonial cities of the region, which were built along a grid plan”.<\/p>\n
