Barbados is among these countries.<\/p>\n<p>Local hotels, along with health officials, continue to take steps to control the spread of this virus, putting in\u00a0place\u00a0preventive and control measures including staff training. The focus is on reducing the presence of the\u00a0Aedes aegypti mosquito, the\u00a0primary mosquito species responsible for\u00a0transmitting the Zika virus.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant women, and those\u00a0planning to become pregnant,\u00a0should continue to be particularly careful because\u00a0of the possible link between the Zika virus and microcephaly, a birth defect where a baby&#8217;s head is smaller than expected.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ways to protect yourself from mosquito bites:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"content-list-text\">\n<li>Use mosquito repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon, eucalyptus or IR3535.\u00a0 Repellent can be purchased at local supermarkets, pharmacies and convenience stores.<\/li>\n<li>Use mosquito nets in hotels and other accommodation.<\/li>\n<li>Burn mosquito coils or candles. Remember to extinguish all candles when leaving the premises or going to sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Spray rooms with insecticide.<\/li>\n<li>Set the air-conditioner to a lower temperature at night.<\/li>\n<li>Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors or in areas prone to mosquitoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several governments have issued travel warnings for countries in which the presence of the Zika virus has been confirmed.
