The golden roe is a delicious delicacy, enjoyed by Barbadians for many years. Unfortunately a\u00a0decline in the sea egg population led to extensive bans on harvesting.\u00a0But good news&#8230; the ban has been briefly lifted and Bajans are once again enjoying this delicious treat.<\/p>\n<p>Our search for sea eggs began with a trip across the island from the west coast to the eastern fishing village at <a href=\"http:\/\/barbados.org\/consett.htm\">Conset Bay<\/a>. Under sunny skies we set out, and after\u00a0a few missed signs and detours, arrived at this beautiful bay.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1100\" src=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/conset-bay-barbados.jpg\" alt=\"Conset Bay Barbados\" width=\"585\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/conset-bay-barbados.jpg 585w, https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/conset-bay-barbados-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As soon as we alighted from the car, we were greeted with friendly calls of &#8220;You looking for sea eggs?&#8221;. Replying in the affirmative, we were directed onto the jetty where the roes were being harvested from the urchins collected that morning by local divers.<\/p>\n<p>Several persons were seated on the jetty, hard at work. Some (known as the &#8220;breakers&#8221;) were cracking open the sea eggs and scooping out the roe; others carefully washing the roe in buckets of water to remove sand and shell; still others were packing the delicacy into containers, ready for sale.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1101\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1101\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1101\" src=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sea-eggs-jetty.jpg\" alt=\"Sea egg action on the jetty\" width=\"250\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sea-eggs-jetty.jpg 250w, https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sea-eggs-jetty-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sea egg action on the jetty<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The whole bay was a hive of activity as some professional\u00a0fishermen headed out in\u00a0colourful boats, while\u00a0the amateur\u00a0fishermen fished off the jetty with poles, quickly catching the fish that were attracted to the discarded sea eggs shells being tossed back into the sea by the &#8220;breakers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We approached the first sea egg vendor but were told that he was selling the last of his catch. He\u00a0suggested that we\u00a0to head to another vendor at the end of the jetty.\u00a0Alas the jetty was blocked by the sheer abundance of sea eggs. Seeing that we couldn&#8217;t walk along the jetty, the vendor quickly hopped off the side and onto the tyres that line the jetty. With amazing agility he quickly made to the other vendor and arranged for him to package up a portion of sea eggs for us&#8230; Bajan hospitality at its best!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1105\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1105\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1105\" src=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/conset-hat.jpg\" alt=\"The &quot;flying hat&quot;\" width=\"250\" height=\"205\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The &#8220;flying hat&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we waited we enjoyed the banter of the &#8220;breakers&#8221;, including one whose colourful hat was repeatedly blowing off in the brisk\u00a0tradewinds. \u00a0On several occasions, persons on the other side of the jetty had to grab the hat before it landed in the sea! She didn&#8217;t seem too worried as she repeatedly placed it back on her hand, brushing aside suggestions that she &#8220;tie it on&#8221;!<\/p>\n<p>We admired the skill on display as each shell was quickly cracked and opened, and the sea egg roe carefully removed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1102\" style=\"width: 595px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1102\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1102\" src=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/removing-roe.jpg\" alt=\"Removing the roe\" width=\"585\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/removing-roe.jpg 585w, https:\/\/barbados.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/removing-roe-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Removing the roe<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After a few minutes our sea egg was ready, and with hearty thanks to both vendors, we headed home to prepare the dish.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally sea egg is either steamed or sauteed, and served with plain white\u00a0rice, cucumber and a few slices of avocado pear.<br \/>\nWe has ours sauteed with some onion and sweet peppers, and served with pickled cucumber and rice. How was it?
