ROOTS AND GRASSES

Barbadian, Ireka ,has established herself as one of the leading Strawcraft designers in the region. Over the years her worked has developed from simple straw mats and boxes to sophisticated and sometimes elaborate baskets. She uses a special weaving technique that twining an assortment of local grasses into each basket. These grasses are usually kept in a dry, natural state, however she does put some straws through a dye process so that colour can be blended into the baskets as an added lift. A dynamic feature of her work is her inclusion of seeds, coconut shell and sea shells which can be found woven into these baskets again defining the development of an artist.
