Elson, Areti and Maorais leads chess tournament

Barbadian players Askari Elson and Muralidhar  Areti along with Jamaica National junior champion Alain Morais are sharing the lead on 4 points after the conclusion of rounds 3&4 in the Sagicor Open Junior Chess Championships.

In round 3 Askari defeated fellow Barbadian and promising junior Martyn Del Castilho and then in round 4 he returned to outplay former champion Sean Perryman in game that went to the last 5 minutes of play. Jamaican players Alain Morais positioned himself in the top spot after he defeated Alex Jackman in round 3 and Antonio Gellineau of Trinidad in round 4. Muralidhar Areti positioned himself as one of the leaders after he defeated Margaret Thairu in round 3 and Surinam junior Champion Avinash Wahi in round 5.

Close on their heels in 2nd position on 3 ½ points is Barbadian player Craig Clermond.   Clermond earned his stripes as he defeated Corey Morgan in round 3 and Imran Hosein of Trinidad in round 4.

Defending champion finds the going tough

Defending champion Allan Munro of the Trinidad Junior federation hopes of retaining this year’s title appears to be very slim after he had two consecutive losses. In round 3 he lost to fellow Trinidadian player Mark Richards of the Trinidad Chess foundation and in round 4 he went down to  Darren Wisdom of Jamaica.

Matches to Come

In round 5 the tournament’s two highest rated players Askari Elson and Alain Morais   will play each other on board 1. On board 2 Muralidhar Areti will take on fellow Barbadian player Craig Clermond.
