Elson, Areti and Maorais leads chess tournament
Barbadian players Askari Elson and Muralidhar Areti
along with Jamaica National junior champion Alain
Morais are sharing the lead on 4 points after the
conclusion of rounds 3&4 in the Sagicor Open Junior Chess
Championships.
In round 3 Askari
defeated fellow Barbadian and promising junior Martyn
Del Castilho
and then in round 4 he returned to outplay former champion Sean Perryman in game that went to the last 5 minutes of play.
Jamaican players Alain
Morais positioned himself in the top spot after he
defeated Alex Jackman in round 3 and Antonio
Gellineau of Trinidad in round 4. Muralidhar Areti
positioned himself as one of the leaders after he defeated Margaret Thairu in round 3 and Surinam junior Champion Avinash
Wahi in round 5.
Close on their heels
in 2nd position on 3 ½ points is Barbadian player Craig
Clermond. Clermond
earned his stripes as he defeated Corey
Morgan in round 3 and Imran Hosein of Trinidad in
round 4.
Defending
champion finds the going tough
Defending champion Allan Munro of the Trinidad Junior federation hopes of retaining
this year’s title appears to be very slim after he had two
consecutive losses. In round 3 he lost to fellow Trinidadian
player Mark Richards of the Trinidad Chess foundation and in round 4 he
went down to Darren Wisdom of Jamaica.

tournament’s two highest rated players Askari
Elson and Alain
Morais will play each
other on board 1. On board 2 Muralidhar
Areti will take on fellow Barbadian player Craig
Clermond.
