Round 1
Seventy players have register for the
Sagicor Open Junior chess championship, which began, today at
the N.U.W.P headquarters. This year’s event attracted a
record number of overseas players which include a 17 player
line up Trinidad and Tobago, two 2 players form Jamaica and
another 2 players from Surinam.
No
scare for Top Player
On the top board number one seed Askari
Elson of Barbados easily defeated the unrated Keron of
Cabrillis of Trinidad. On board two 2 Darren Wisdom of Jamaica
defeated Crystal Carrington of the lodge school. In other
action defending Champion Allan Munro of Trinidad defeated
Caleb Clarke of Lester Vaughn School. On board 22 top seed of
Jamaica overcame Felix Huggins from the lodge school. On board
33 top seed Avinash Wahi of Suriname won against Mario Butcher
of the Alexandria school. In an interesting encounter On board
18 ten (10) year Christopher Raphael of Trinidad defeated
Roshni Jagroep of Suriname

Games
Dave Melwani who had an advantage of a
Queen in the endgame faltered under time pressure to stalemate
his game against Paul Forde from the lodge school in a game
that lasted 65 moves In another Bajan T&T clash Alpacino
Smith of Trinidad overcame Harrison O’Neal of the lodge
school in game that lasted 76 moves.

Tomorrow
On board one (1) top Junior Askari Elson will have the
black Pieces against Emmerson Hurley of Garrison Secondary.
Board 2 will see Darren Wisdom of Jamaica pushing the white
pieces against Christopher Raphael of Jamaica. One other
interesting match up will see National Qualifier Martyn
Delcastilho of the Lodge school playing the white pieces
against T&T reigning national ladies champion Desiree
Derrick.
