The Sagicor Barbados Junior Open has come to an end. As they say all
good things must end at some time.
However, the memories of this wonderful tournament will no doubt
stay with us for years to come.
Looking back on this week we can say that the players provided us with
excitement and intriguing Chess and for this you must give
yourselves a round of applause.
When we arrived here on Monday we had high expectations, especially when
we saw that the lineup included many former champions Askari
Elson from Barbados ,and 2 trini’s Sean Perryman and
Allan Munro. Of course they were the two strong Jamaicans
Allain Morais and Daren Wisdom.
For the first time in the history of this tournament there was a
contingent from Suriname they were Avinash Wahi and Roshni
Jagroep. We hope that in the years to come we will have many
more talented Surinamese junior players in our junior
tournaments and that we can visit Suriname soon.
From the start Elson lead the pack, with Areti, Morais and Wisdom hot on
his heals in pursuit of the
coveted title. Elson broke away from the pack in round 6 after
he defeated fellow countryman Muralidahar Areti in a spine
thrilling game. After this he easily cruised home with a draws
against Daren Wisdom of Jamaica and fellow Barbadian Olaudah
Pryce.
Taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively were the
reggae boys Darren Wisdom and Alain Morais.
As I conclude on the behalf of the executive of the Barbados chess
federation we would sincerely hope that this chess tournament
will encourage you to participate in next years event which
promises to be bigger and better.
