Bajans Falter in Round Two (2) of World Youth
Chess Championships
Round two (2) saw the bajan connection faltering at critical
moments and therefore secure only a half point from Martyn
Del Castilho.
Alex Jackman
(rated 1806 by F.I.D.E., playing in the World under 14
Section came up against unknown from, Kenya Rahul
Mohan. Alex with the white pieces played e4 as his
opening move and had to play against a Sicilian
Scheveningen/Najdorf without the early b5. Alex came
out of the opening with the exchange up (Rook for a Bishop)
thereby dismissing his opponent’s defensive moves, but Alex
mis-calculated his time situation and lost on time at move
34, although in a clearly winning position.
Justin Blackman
(rated 1957 by F.I.D.E) playing in the World under 16
Section was up against Yilmaz Mustafa of Turkey,
(rated 2247 by F.I.D.E). Justin playing the white piece
started with e4 and had to play against a Sicilian
Najdorf (e4 c5, Nf3 d6, d4 cxd4, Nxd4 Nf6, Nc3 a6 Be3,
e5), considered unusual by chess analyst. Justin got into a
middle game which he did not understand, played a series of
moves which were too slow for the position and
allowed the “young Turk” to assemble his Queen, Rooks,
Knight and a black squared Bishop against his (Justin’s)
queen side castled king position, it was not long before
Justin’s position collapsed, his king exposed and the point
going to the young Turkish man in 28 moves.
Barbados was to get some hope from Martyn Del Castilho
(rated 2126 by F.I.D.E), He is playing in the World under
18 Section. Del Castilho defended with the black pieces
against the unrated Turkishman Gunaydin. Martyn played the
Pelikan and Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian Defense.
The game remained even at all times and petered out into a
dull Rook and Pawn endgame which was drawn after five
hours of play and 46 moves.
Time is one of the elements of Chess and the management of
it is critical at this level, players have an average of two
(2) minutes and seven (7) seconds per move and must
calculate if spending more or less time on a move. This has
surfaced as one of our areas of weakness and will be
addressed in the locker room. “Peter Dawson”
