FIDE Master Dr Philip Corbin won the National Championship for seven times in the past. Accomplishments include: Third, at age 13, in first tournament competed in, the London Under 14 Championship, and the winner of the Brilliancy Prize in that championship. Seven time winner, since 1976, of the Barbados National Chess Championship; and runner-up on 14 occasions (including 2003). Past President (1990) of the Barbados Chess Federation. Barbados representative in several regional and international chess tournaments. First represented Barbados in the 1975 Caribbean Chess Championship, Guyana, on top board of a six-man team, gaining three wins and one draw from 7 games, the best performance by a Barbadian. Fourth in the 1986 World Open (under FIDE 2200 section), Philadelphia, playing unbeaten,and winning the Brilliancy Prize with a game which was published in the American Chess Magazine, Chess Life that year. Winner of two Trinidad Open Tournaments (1986 and 1987) and the first St.Martin International Open. Only Barbadian to have
taken part in all the Olympiads (8) where Barbados has been represented
(Dubai 1986, Greece 1988, Yugoslavia 1990, Moscow 1994, Armenia 1996,
Kalmykia 1998, Istanbul 2000, Bled 2002). Gained International FIDE rating
at the Dubai 1986 Olympiad, playing on top board. On all occasions but one
finished with the best percentage score of the Barbadian players. Best
international performance was at the Greek Olympiad with 7 wins, 4 draws,
from 14 games, when rating peaked at FIDE 2315. Twice captained a National team to victory in the Caribbean Chess Championships; also captained the National team for the 32nd Chess Olympiad, Armenia, 1996, Eighth in the 1999 SubZonal, Venezuela, with 5 pts from 9 games (4 wins, 2 draws) earning the title of FIDE Master.
