For an island that’s just 166 square miles it’s amazing how much there is to in Barbados! Every day, and every night, the island is abuzz with activity and there truly is something for everyone.

For sports fans there’s:

  • cricket playing nearly every weekend
  • polo season between January and April
  • horseracing throughout the year
  • motorsports, especially in summer
  • watersports year round
  • tennis, road tennis and table tennis
  • and even more sedate ‘sports’ like chess and bridge
Art galleriesare dotted across the island, displaying the work of local artists along with visiting artists from the Caribbean and further afield.The performing artsare on show in March for the Holders Season and in November with the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA).

And speaking of festivals, Barbados has those in abundance too! Crop Over is our summer festival of music, food, art and craft, and all around good times that culminates in a Carnival-like parade in early August. The Holetown Festival celebrates the early settlement of Barbados in the 16oo’s, while the Oistins Fish Festival pays tribute to those in the fishing industry. The Celtic Festival celebrates the historic and cultural links between Barbados and the Celtic countries.

As Barbados boasts excellent conference facilities and host hotels, the island is also the venue for many Caribbean and International conferences and conventions.

Barbados is also known for its wonderful restaurants and array of dining options! Our Food & Wine & Rum festival is fast becoming a must-do for foodies across the world! Every day/night it seems there are some special dining events on – traditional Sunday buffet lunches; beachfront Barbecue; Curry nights; Wine and Jazz evenings; Pork Fiestas; and Steel Pan Buffets are all on offer.

Daily and weekly events include pub quiz nights, after work limes, live and DJ music in the clubs, catamaran rides, pirate cruises, submarine tours and lectures.

The Barbadian pop group Cover Drive, who opened for Rihanna on the Barbados leg of her Loud tour last year, is now on the top of the British singles chart with their new release “Twilight“.

Barbados born singing sensation Rihanna has sold more digital tracks in the United States than any other artiste.

This news comes from Online International Company Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks the latest media research and trends. As of December 2011, Rihanna has sold over 47 million tracks beating out Lada Gaga, Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Beyoncé.

Barbadian star Rihanna has beaten Madonna’s record for a solo artiste achieving 20 Top 10 singles in the shortest amount of time, according to Billboard Magazine.

The magazine reports that Rihanna’s “We Found Love” from her album “Talk That Talk” has made her the fastest solo artiste to reach 20 Hot 100 Top 10 singles. The song currently is at No. 9 in its second week on the chart, after debuting at No. 16.

Since her 2005 debut in the Top 10, she has had 19 other songs in six years and four months, beating out the pop queen Madonna’s record by five months.

Cheers is definitely a great song for Barbados, with over 1500 rum shops on the island of only 166 square miles :)  Rum shops are an important part of our culture, not just for the local rum and Banks Beer but also as a place to meet, laugh and of course play dominoes and discuss politics :)

Barbados superstar Rihanna is now the hottest female artist on Facebook!

Rihanna’s 40 million plus Facebook fans overtakes Lady Gaga’s count, making Rihanna the most followed female artist on the social media site.

Rihanna will be performing in her homeland Barbados on August 5th as part of her worldwide LOUD tour. It will be Rihanna’s first concert in Barbados since becoming an international star. Our congrats to Barbados’ own superstar Rihanna for copping the prestigious Top Female Artist of The Year and Radio Artist of The Year awards at last night’s Billboard Awards.

Rihanna opened the show with a steamy performance of ‘S&M’ featuring a surprise appearance by Britney Spears!

In her acceptance ‘speech’, Rihanna gave a shout out to her ‘Rihanna Navy’ a term of endearment for her legion of fans.

Well done Rihanna!
